The Florida Veterinary Medical Association's Veterinary Technician Committee (FVMA-VTC) will offer the Florida Practical Examination (FPE) certification exam twice yearly for graduate veterinary technician students and technicians currently certified in other states that wish to become certified in Florida.
Testing is conducted in Florida twice a year, on the third Friday in January and the third Friday in June. The upcoming testing dates and locations are:

The required application for examination certification along with the technician's moral character certification must be returned to the FVMA offices in Orlando by the deadline indicated.
(Note: These required application forms may be downloaded from the FVMA web site.)
The VTNE is offered directly by American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). It is your responsibility to arrange to take the VTNE. It may be taken in Florida or at any of the other locations offered throughout the country in January and June. The score you achieve must be submitted to the FVMA. All Technicians are also required to take the Florida Practical Exam (FPE). Passing scores for BOTH examinations are required for our certifications.
The Florida Practical Exam (FPE) will be administered following the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) which will be given in the morning. Check-in for the FPE Exam is 1:30 p.m. The testing for the FPE will begin shortly after 1:30 p.m.
The examination fee for the FPE is $50.00.
Your state certification through the FVMA is included in this fee.
You are required to re-certified every 2 years on even-years.
FPE PREPARATIONS:
The Florida Practical Examination is a multiple-choice examination consisting of 60 questions. There are 50 are photographs of common veterinary items, such as instruments, photomicrographs of microorganisms, blood and urine smears that the technician will encounter in their everyday life as a practicing Certified Veterinary Technician. In addition there are 10 multiple choice questions covering the material contained in the manual of the “Florida Rules and Regulations for Veterinary Technicians.' This manual can be downloaded under sub-section 7 (Above) on the FVMA web site section under the “Veterinary Technician Certification Program" heading. A grade of seventy (70% or 42 correct answers) is required to pass.
To Qualify for the FPE Examination, the Applicant Must Be:
1. 18 years of age or older;
2. Submit two (2) signed affidavits (Part B and Part C attached) stating that you are in good standing, eligible for the examination and of good moral character;
3. Currently certified, registered or licensed in another state thereby being eligible to sit for the FPE examination in the State of Florida. This includes being current with established continuing education course requirements in the state;
- or -
4. Have qualified to take the examination in previous years, but (a) failed to pass the examination, or (b) failed, since time of certification to become re-certified;
- or -
5. Currently enrolled in the last semester at an AVMA accredited program and will be completing all academic requirements of the veterinary technology program within one (1) month of this FPE testing date. If applying under these requirements, a signed affidavit (Part D) must be submitted with this application. A final transcript indicating you have graduated and a degree in Veterinary Technology/Science was awarded must be submitted to the FVMA. Your certification document will not be issued until this requirement is met.
All applicants should contact the records department of the college from which they graduated, or from which they will be graduating and specify that an OFFICIAL transcript, stating graduation of Veterinary Technology/Science program, be sent to the FVMA-VTC. Proof of graduation must be received by the Committee prior to issuance of certification. You will be notified by the FVMA of the test results by mail within eight (8) weeks of the examination date. Those passing the FPE examination will also be issued a certification document by the FVMA once all requirements are met.

- The completed application, including the general affidavit in Part C and the certificate of moral character in Part B.
- The $50.00 application fee.
- An OFFICIAL transcript indicating graduation from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology/Science Program; or affidavit in Part D indicating current enrollment and that all academic requirements will soon be complete.
OR
Proof of CURRENT Certification, Registration or Licensure from another State.

- In order to gain admission you are required to have each of these items filed with the FVMA prior to the examination date.
